Prothero was devised from Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm's fairytale, Godfather Death. In the fairytale, a father with an infant is choosing a Godfather for the newborn. The father is first approached by God but refuses him as the child's Godfather because he is biased; he gives to the rich and lets the poor starve. Then the father meets the devil. He is refused because he always deceives everyone. Then Death speaks to the father and is chosen because he "makes everyone equal". The father then allows Death to raise the infant. Our adaptation tells the story of what happens to a child that is raised by Death.
